Wrong Person, Right Seat. What to Do? Part 3 of 4

This month, I have been sharing the importance of having the right person for every seat in your organization. Why? Because your people are one of the most important investments your company makes. Invest wisely.

Going from Good to Great

Think about this quote from the book, Good to Great:

[box] “First Who…Then What. We expected that good-to-great leaders would begin by setting a new vision and strategy. We found instead that they first got the right people on the bus, the wrong people off the bus, and the right people in the right seats– and then they figured out where to drive it.”[/box]

As you saw from the story last week, sometimes as business leaders we are faced with situations where a team member could culturally be a great fit for our organization, however, they lacked a desire to do the work or to be in the role they were in. This resulted in unhappy coworkers and an employee who left because they were unhappy. Other times, you are faced with someone who thrives in their role and loves what they do, but they don’t properly embody the core values that guide your company.

Do You Have the Right Tools in Your Toolbox?

The EOS Toolbox was created to help you gain clarity when determining if your current or potential team members are the right fit.

First Who:

Use these tools to determine the right people for the organization.

  • The People AnalyzerTM assists you in understanding how well a person CULTURALLY fits your organization by rating how well they fit your core values.
  • The GWCTM  (Get It + Want It + Capacity to Do It) addresses if the person UNDERSTANDS their role, has a DESIRE to do it, and if they have the SKILLS necessary to perform the job well.

Then What:

Use this tool to clarify what major responsibilities are needed for the business

  • The Accountability ChartTM. This is different from an organization chart. It doesn’t chart structure. Instead, The Accountability Chart documents the ownership of responsibilities throughout your business.

If your business has even one wrong person, even if they are in the right seat, it will detract from your other employees, disrupt productivity and company growth. They are slowly killing your business from the inside. And as a leader, you often don’t see it until it’s too late.  In this situation, you will never get to where you aim to go. Take time to get the right people in the right seats! This investment will help propel you to reaching new places and heights! Stay tuned for next week where we dive in and quantify the cost of the wrong person.
