Getting Everyone on the Same Page

What do you think of when I say the word ‘keyboard’? Do you see a grand piano? Or a small computer keyboard? What else? Such a simple word, yet it has so many different variations and meanings. The same is true for your business. Does everyone on your team see the business in exactly the same way? Do you all have the same understanding of what the vision is and how you are going to achieve it?

When everyone is on the same page and seeing the same thing in their mind’s eye, the chances of you achieving your vision are significantly higher, because everyone is working together towards the same thing. However, when even one person is on a different page, different decisions are being made that aren’t aligned. Going for a grand piano is very different than going for a keyboard.

Why Everyone in Your Business Needs to Be on the Same Page

Think about it this way. The CEO and COO of a company are misaligned on what the vision of the company is. The CEO believes that what is ‘BEST’ for the company is being leading, cutting-edge and innovative. On the other hand, the COO believes that what is ‘BEST’ for the company means quality, stability, and reliability.

So, when Sally asks the CEO how to handle a task, the CEO tells her to find the newest options available. Later on, however, the COO yells at Sally, telling her that she should have been focusing on trying to ensure that the current product is more reliable, not chasing after the newest options. Because of the inconsistency from leadership, Sally now feels confused. She is running around in circles, not knowing what is the right direction because she is getting different answers from different leaders. Sally thinks these leaders have no idea what’s going on or what they are talking about. And if they don’t know, how should she? That’s when Sally decides she’s fed up with the confusion and starts to look for a new job.

That is how businesses lose good people. If the CEO and COO had been on the same page, they would have both communicated the same thing in the same way to Sally, avoiding confusion and continuing to move the business forward. You need to get everyone 100% on the same page to make any traction towards your goals and build a consistent, healthy culture.

Getting Aligned & Taking it to the Next Level

Getting leadership on the same page is only half the battle. Now, we need to ensure that everyone in our organization is also 100% crystal clear on the direction of the company. To do that, you have to get everyone together, in the same room, every quarter, and tell them.

  • Here’s where we’ve been.
  • Here’s where we are.
  • Here’s where we’re going.

By doing this consistently, every quarter, you’re going to get them to understand it, internalize it, and want to be a part of your vision. Remember, it takes 7 times for people to internalize something for the first time. Consistency is key. If they need to hear it 7 times, and you do this every quarter—never wavering—it will take them 1 year and 9 months to truly hear it and want to be a part of it. So, let’s get the clock started now. The sooner we get started, the sooner they will all be on board.
